Roger R. Markwald, Ph.D., MUSC Cell Biology and Anatomy Department chairman and professor, received the American Association of Anatomy’s highest scientific accolade on April 5 during its annual meeting in San Diego. The Henry Gray award was co-sponsored by the American Association of Anatomists and Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, which recognizes unique and meritorious contributions and achievements in the field of Anatomical Sciences by a distinguished AAA member.

My laboratory has pursued studies on the cell and molecular mechanisms of heart development that utilized in vivo dynamic labeling studies to demonstrate that heart development is progressive, irreversible and occurs by the addition of new segments including ones derived from extracardiac sources. Three dimensional culture assays were also developed that faithfully recapitulated in vivo morphogenetic processes which permitted identification of: (1) a novel heart forming field that gave origin to the outflow track at the arterial pole of the heart (, (2) specific growth factors of the TGFβ supergene as inducers of the outflow track and the transformation of specific populations of endothelial cells into multiple progenitor cells of internal partitions that divide the heart into right and left sides a and their respective valves and (3) specific matricellular proteins (periostin and CCN1,2) as ligands that activate integrin-linked, nodal intracellular kinase pathways in valvuloseptal progenitor cells that promote their differentiation into fibroblasts and regulate cytoskeletal changes that promote their remodeling into sculpted leaflets. Modifications of the culture system have also permitted the functional assessment of the viscoelastic properties of developing valves and the role of biomechanical signaling in cardiac cell and matrix differentiation.

Dr. Mironov studied Medicine at the Ivanovo Sate Medical University, Ivanovo, Russia and graduated as MD in 1977. He received his PhD degree in Developmental Biology 1980 at the Moscow Pirogov State Medical Institute in 1980. After that he worked at different position in Germany, USA and Brazil. Last 5 years he serves as Chief Scientific Officer of private bioprinting company 3D Bioprinting Solutions, Moscow, Russia. He bioprinted world first functional vascularized mouse organ – mouse thyroid gland in 2015 and bioprinted a first 3D tissue (human cartilage) in Space at the International Space Station in December of 2018.

He is an Academic Coordinator in Orthopedics at Hospital H+ Querétaro and; advisory member of University of Valley of México. He has published results in osteoarthritis with stem cells.

lain Chapel is a Scientific Investigator at IRSN, Laboratory of Radiopathology and Experimental Therapies.For 25 years, he has been developing gene and cell therapy using non-human primates, immune-tolerant mice and rats to protect against the side effects of radiation. He collaborates with clinicians to develop strategies for treatment of patients after radiotherapy overexposures. He has participated in the first establishment of proof of concept of the therapeutic efficacy of Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) for the treatment of hematopoietic deficit, radiodermatitis and over dosages of radiotherapy. He has contributed to the first reported correction of deficient hematopoiesis in patients (graft failure and aplastic anemia) thanks to intravenous injection of MSCs restoring the bone marrow microenvironment, mandatory to sustain hematopoiesis after total body irradiation. He is scientific investigator of Clinical phase II trial evaluating the efficacy of systemic MSC injections for the treatment of severe and chronic radiotherapy-induced abdomino-pelvic complications refractory to standard therapy (NCT02814864Hirsch Index 26.

Dr. Brij. M. Gandhi, M.Sc., Ph.D. is presently CEO and founder of Neo BioMed Services (www.neobiomed.com), providing services and consultancy in health areas and regulatory issues related to biopharmaceuticals, pharmaceuticals, including stem cell and regenerative medicine. Dr. Gandhi had his Masters in Biochemistry from PAU and Ph.D. in Experimental Medicine from the University of Bergan, Norway. He was trained at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA; London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, London; National Institutes of Health, Maryland, USA; Hvidovre Hospital, Copenhagen and University of Bergan, Norway. Dr. Gandhi retired in 2006 as Adviser to the Government of India, Ministry of Science and Technology, Department of Biotechnology, managing promotion and policy related issues in biotechnology related to international collaborations, medical biotechnology, infrastructure development, animals and aquaculture biotechnology. Prior to that, Dr. Gandhi served as Research Scientist at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. Dr. Gandhi continues to serve as Advisor / Director to a number of institutions/pharma and biopharma industries with an experience of about 51 years of active service, as research scientist, science manager, adviser/consultant and has over 155 publications.
